It translates the exploration and puzzle-solving elements of the Arkham series to a 2.5D side-scrolling format pretty well. The Metroidvania-inspired level design works really well as it encourages you to backtrack and uncover hidden secrets you’ve missed, adding some depth to the gameplay. Where Blackgate really falters is the combat, as it lacks fluidity and impact (leading to occasional frustration during some battles), which is a shame, because combat was so great in the previous titles. Similarly, the platforming sections can feel clunky at times, detracting from the overall experience. The boss fights are somewhat memorable as they all have different gimmicks to them.
